Supported by the UEA Alumni Fund, the School of Psychology and SU will collaborate to offer Mental Health First Aid training to students.
In the autumn semester, the fund will allow an initial 48 student leaders the opportunity to complete their training before the project is extended to Psychology students
The qualification will provide students with the knowledge to identify, understand and provide support to peers with mental health issues.
The Alumni Fund is used to improve student experiences and responsible for funding eight projects in 2017.
Donations from alumni support events such as the hosting of a national trauma and leadership conference and enhancements to the Library.
SU Welfare, Community and Diversity Officer India Edwards praised the partnership between the School of Psychology and SU in ìaddressing mental health across the whole university community”.
She said: “We’re very excited to get this support to develop and train our Student Leaders to support the wider student community. Promoting wellbeing and good mental health is important work, one which is a growing priority for students and staff alike.”
The qualification will be lead by two UEA staff members, one from the SU and one from the School of Psychology, who will receive training to become certified Mental Health First Aid instructors.
Professor of Learning and Teaching in Psychology, Neil Cooper, said the qualification was also valuable for improving students employability.
He said: “Psychology students take a wealth of skills into the workplace and this initiative offers a great opportunity to strengthen applied skills which complement their academic studies while making a positive impact on the campus community.”

“The Alumni Fund furnished a new media room for the SU, and we are delighted that this year the Student Union and School of Psychology are working together for the benefit of all UEA students in this very important area.”
