US Flag Confiscated For Being "Offensive" by Norwich Police Constable

Police confiscated an American flag from UEA’s newly formed American Studies Society (AMS) on grounds that “it could cause offence to people." The incident took place while the “sixty strong group” were on their society social in Norwich city centre. AMS member and flag bearer, Daniel Glazebrook, was apprehended by Police while the congregati on were walking down Prince of Wales Road.

Information Commissioner’s Office state UEA broke the law with requests for climate data. Vice-Chancellor Edward Acton questions the verdict’s legitimacy: “nothing has yet been established”.

Spending to Increase Despite Cuts

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has announced a series of savage cuts to universities’ budgets for the 2010-11 academic year. The confirmed cuts, which total £449m, include a hefty £215m slashing of teaching budgets. The reductions come amid soaring demand for places with UEA recording a 30% increase in applications.

Second Consecutive Referendum Fails to Reach Quorum

The Union referendum on the proposed Activities and Student Development Officer held on the 25 and 26th January failed to reach quorum. This is the second consecutive policy ballot that has failed to reach quorum, the first being the ‘You Count Referendum’ which took place on the 24th November. The new position had beenone of the key proposals of the new constitution recently approved at Union Council.

Government Plans to Impact Student Housing

The Government has announced new plans that look set to affect how, and where, students live. New laws will give local councils the power to grant, or deny, permission for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs).


Unversities Inflexible

Charles Clarke, Norwich-South MP, has criticised inflexible universities for the higher education funding system not working properly, when he was called to give evidence in front of the tuition fees review led by Lord Browne. Refusing to state a clear position on potential increases in tuition fees, he condemned universities for not making fees variable and almost always charging full price.

Three Students in Unprovoked Eaton Park Attack

Three male students were violently attacked in Eaton Park on Tuesday 26th January. In an unprovoked altercation, the students suffered repeated punches, leaving them with black eyes, cuts and painful swollen faces.


UEA Labour Society Higher Education Debate

The UEA Labour Society held a Higher Education debate at the end of last term which focused on three main questions posed by the members of the society to the panel.The members of the panel included Labour MP for Norwich South, Charles Clarke, NUS President Wes Streeting, and Professor Edward Acton, Vice- Chancellor at UEA.

The first question concerned the Climatic Research Unit controversy at UEA.  Specifically, how students should feel about the saga and whether CRU’s director, Professor Jones, was right to have resigned following pending enquiries into the affair.

Sir Muir Russell to Lead Inquiry on Climate Data Scandal

Vice-Chancellor Professor Edward Acton, has appointed Sir Muir Russell to lead an Independent Review which is to investigate allegations made against the UEA’s globally renowned Climatic Research Unit (CRU).

UEA Teaching Awards

Nominations for UEA’s annual Award for Excellence in Teaching, which seeks to recognise outstanding teachers amongst staff across UEA faculties, are now open.

The five awards were introduced to recognise innovative and superlative teaching, for which students and colleagues nominate specific teachers.  Each faculty is designated a specific award relating to its staff and a fifth award is available to a nominee who is teaching students but does not fall into the other categories.
