Military matters

As we head into a new year, it seems fitting that we introduce some of the newest trends to hit the fashion world. Military themed items have been popular for a number of years now, however it is only recently that they have been cast into the spotlight. With an abundance of khaki pieces adorning our high streets it makes it that little bit easier to incorporate this trend into your day-to-day wardrobe.

Balmain is one of the main fashion houses that has championed the military trend, with a number of high street stores using their pieces as inspiration. Balmain incorporates a number of military-esque features into their collections, including gold detailing and embellishment, power shoulders, and more recently, a number of khaki items such as skirts, jackets and jumpsuits. The Kardashian-Jenner clan are well-known fans of Balmain and are frequently seen with the Creative Director of the company, Olivier Rousteing, and can regularly be seen wearing his designs. Kim Kardashian wears the military trend especially well, mixing classic pieces with statement military detailing to create an on-trend and stylish look.

High Street stores are now jumping on the military bandwagon, recreating high end designs at much more affordable prices, and in much more wearable ways. The simplest way to incorporate military pieces into your wardrobe if you’re not completely sold on the trend is a simple khaki jumper, t-shirt or jacket.

New Look have a huge collection of khaki knitwear, including khaki roll-necks, allowing you to nail a number of trends in just one outfit! These simple items are incredibly wearable too, and paired with a simple pair of jeans are perfect for a seminar, or an afternoon in the library.

Military-style shirts are also incredibly easy to get your hands on, especially if you know your way around the charity shops of Norwich! If you’re not a fan of second-hand, then Topshop or New Look are the places to be. Team your shirt with a pair of black leather trousers for a night out, or if you prefer a dressier look, then tucking your shirt into a pencil skirt will always ensure that you look glam and chic! Leather is the perfect accompaniment to the military trend, and River Island offer the perfect combination in the shape of a khaki faux-leather midi skirt: sexy AND stylish – what more could you ask for!

If you’re really not sure about khaki, as some people aren’t, then a black jumpsuit or playsuit is a great alternative – just remember to accessorise, as this is the key to a military-inspired outfit.

Chunky gold jewellery will never go out of fashion, and is the perfect partner for these items. Also look out for details such as buckles, pockets and buttons which add a flawless utilitarian finish, helping you achieve that military look. Beauty-wise, it is best to stick to a smoky eye and nude lip combo for the ultimate in military glamour.
