SINGLE REVIEW: Within The Outer

Billy George, lead vocalist and guitarist for the Norwich-based band Sleemo, has recently started a solo project under the name One Man’s Stop Sign.

With three singles out so far, One Man’s Stop Sign is also set to release an EP very soon. Here is a quick look at the most recent of the three singles, titled ‘Within The Outer’.

‘Within The Outer’ starts out as purely instrumental featuring piano and strings at different rhythms, before George comes in with rich vocals to punctuate the multiple layers of melody. The ambience present throughout the track is reminiscent of Eno, especially the use of acoustic guitar against a low, shining synth after George’s vocal performance.

The track makes use of a technique called ‘phase shifting’ throughout, particularly polyrhythms and progressive patterns.
